NEW LONDON, Conn. - Junior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover) broke a 1-1 tie with an RBI single in the seventh to lift the No. 10 Wheaton College baseball team to a 2-1 win over Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Friday afternoon.
Classmate Frank Holbrook (Middletown, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) tossed a complete game, four-hitter to earn his second win of the season and extend the Lyons (10-1, 4-0 NEWMAC) win streak to 10 games. Wheaton pounded out 16 hits - including three each from senior Hal Landers (Salem, N.H./Salem) and junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton).
The Lyons stranded eight runners through the first four innings before breaking a scoreless tie in the fifth. Ryan led off with a single, stole second, and scored on a single by freshman and reigning D3baseball.com Team of the Week first baseman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical). The hit extended Cruz's hitting streak to 10 games.
The Bears (7-8, 2-2 NEWMAC) tied the game in the sixth on a sac fly by junior Tyler Babkiewich (Golden, Colo./Golden). In the seventh, Ryan again led off with a single and stole second. Two batters later, De la Cruz moved Ryan to third with a single, and Gusovsky followed with a run-scoring single.
Holbrook retired the Bears in order in the seventh and allowed a two-out hit in the eighth before recording the third out. In the ninth, Babkiewich drew a leadoff walk and moved to second on a sac bunt by senior Eddie Kalankiewicz (San Diego, Calif./University of La Verne). Babkiewich advanced to third on a fly ball by junior Mike Massaro (Sewell, N.J./Penn Charter) before Holbrook got junior Nolan Gallagher (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) to ground to second base to end the game.
Holbrook walked one and struck out four to earn the win for head coach Eric Podbelski, who used six pitchers in Thursday's 8-7 win over Endicott in 14 innings. Junior Derek Petty (Parker, Colo./New Mexico Military Academy) suffered the loss for Coast Guard, allowing 14 hits and two runs with seven strikeouts in seven innings of work. Wheaton left 13 runners on base.
De la Cruz, Gusovsky, senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), and junior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) each recorded two hits for Wheaton. Jensen and Ryan both extended their hitting streak to five games.
Wheaton and Coast Guard will play a doubleheader Saturday at noon at Sidell Stadium in Norton.
