HARTFORD, Conn. – The No. 10 Wheaton College baseball team saw its five-game winning streak snapped with a 7-3 loss at Trinity (Conn.) College in non-conference action Monday afternoon.
The loss drops the Lyons to 20-4 and 11-2 against non-conference opponents. The win extends the Bantams win streak to 12 and lifts their record to 19-5.
Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) drew a two-out walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical). He has now hit safely in 21 of the Lyons 24 games this season.
The Lyons doubled their lead in the second when junior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) singled to lead off the inning and came in on a passed ball with freshman Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) at the plate.
The Bantams struck for three in their half of the frame to take a 3-2 lead. Junior Michael Rueger (Teaneck, N.J./Teaneck) was credited with the first RBI of the inning when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Freshman Bryan Wolfe (La Habra Heights, Calif./Sonora) followed with an RBI single to tie the game at two, and junior Stephen Rodgers (Watertown, Mass./St. Sebastian's) lifted a sac fly to left to give Trinity a 3-2 edge.
Wheaton tied the game in the fifth on an RBI double by Jensen that plated senior Dan Demeo (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury). In the bottom half of the frame, senior Luke Auger (Avon, Conn./Avon) provided the go-ahead runs for Trinity with a two-run double. An RBI double off the bat of freshman Kyle Decker (Simsbury, Conn./Simsbury) in the seventh and a solo home run by Rueger in the eighth accounted for the final two runs of the contest.
Junior Corey Laliberte (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) started on the bump for Wheaton and worked the first 4.1 innings. He allowed five hits and three runs with two walks and two strikeouts. The loss drops him to 2-1 on the season.
Junior Ben Goldberg (Plainville, N.Y./Plainview-Old Bethpage JFK) pitched the first 2.2 innings for the Bantams and surrendered three hits and two runs (one earned). He walked three and did not strike out a batter. Senior Edward Donovan (Milton, Mass./Boston College H.S.) pitched six innings in relief to earn his first victory of the season. He scattered five hits and surrendered one run with seven strikeouts.
Jensen and De la Cruz each finished with two hits while Ryan went 1-for-4, giving him at least one hit in 20 of Wheaton's 24 games this season. Rueger and Alger each drove in two runs for Trinity.
The Lyons return to action tomorrow afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. contest with New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) foe Springfield at Sidell Stadium. The Bantams host Bowdoin Friday at 3 p.m.
