Wheaton upended by Endicott, 5-3

NORTON, Mass. - Freshman Tyler Contillo (Montville, Conn./Montville) had three hits for the No. 5 Wheaton College baseball team, which saw its 10-game winning streak snapped with a 5-3 loss to Endicott College in non-conference action Tuesday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.

Junior Eric Lemke (Southington, Conn./Southington) and sophomore EJ Martinez (Brooklyn, N.Y./Poly Prep) each had two hits and an RBI for the Gulls(20-13), who improved to 4-12 all-time against the Lyons.

Endicott held the Lyons (30-5) to just six hits through the first eight innings. After Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the third on a sac fly by junior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham), the Gulls responded with a pair in the fifth to go ahead 2-1. Junior Ralph Fidaleo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Warde) belted a one-out home run over the left field fence off junior Corey Laliberte (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) to tie the game at one. Freshman Chase Sullivan (Cumberland, R.I./Bishop Hendricken) followed with a double and came around to score on a two-bagger off the bat of Lemke.

In the sixth, Martinez laced a one-out double and scored on a double by senior Michael Russo (Natick, Mass./Natick) to stretch Endicott's led to 3-1. A sac fly by sophomore Tad Gold (Martha's Vineyard, Mass./Martha's Vineyard Regional) in the seventh made it 4-1 before Contillo singled and scored on a groundout by senior Dan Demeo (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) in Wheaton's half of the frame to bring the score to 4-2.

Endicott senior Danny Mello (Peabody, Mass./Peabody) put Wheaton in a three-run hole in the eighth when he brought in the Gulls fifth run with a sac fly. Down to their final three outs, the Lyons strung together four-consecutive hits from junior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover), Contillo, senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury), and Demeo to cut the deficit to 5-3. Endicott sophomore reliever Connor McLaughlin (Clinton, Mass./Clinton) - who surrendered singles to Keating and Demeo - regrouped and retired the next two Wheaton batters to earn his second save of the season.

Laliberte fell to 2-2 with the loss as he allowed six hits and three runs with two walks and three strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Sophomore Tyler Hill (Plymouth, N.H./New Hampton School) picked up his first win of the season for the Gulls. He surrendered six hits and two runs (one earned) with two walks and one strikeout.

"Their starting pitcher did a good job. This was a day where we just weren't able to put a whole lot of things together," said Lyons head coach Eric Podbelski. "They had some innings where they tacked on single runs. Today just wasn't our day, and it's not going to be our day all the time."

Keating finished with two hits for the Lyons while freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) went 1-for-3, giving him at least one hit in 32 of the Lyons 35 games this season.

Wheaton returns to action on Thursday with a 6 p.m. contest at Eastern Connecticut State. The Gulls play two against Curry College tomorrow at 2 p.m.
