Lyons drop second-straight with 4-2 loss at No. 16 Eastern Connecticut State

MANSFIELD, Conn. - Junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) belted his second home run of the season in No. 5 Wheaton College's 4-2 loss at No. 16 Eastern Connecticut State University in non-conference baseball action Thursday afternoon.

Junior Dan Gusovsky (Andover, Mass./Andover) recorded an RBI double for the Lyons (30-6), who have lost two-straight for the first time this season. Junior Joe Balowski (Berlin, Conn./Berlin) went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI for the Warriors, who improved to 24-9 with the win.

Balowski's two-run shot in the third staked the Warriors to a 2-0 lead. Gusovsky's double in the fourth cut the home team's lead in half at 2-1 until the seventh, when ECSU tacked on two runs to push its lead to 4-1. Sophomore Dan O'Connell (Braintree, Mass./Braintree) brought in the Warriors third run on an RBI groundout, followed by an RBI single off the bat of senior Steve Cammuso (Rutland, Mass./Wachusett Regional).

Ryan's solo shot over the left field fence leading off the eighth got the Lyons to within one. Later in the frame, Wheaton had runners on second and third with two down, but senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) popped up to end the inning.

Senior Nolan Corr (Somersworth, N.H./Saint Thomas Aquinas) surrendered eight hits and two runs over six innings to fall to 5-2. He walked one and struck out two. Senior Tom Darby (Middletown, R.I./Middletown) improved to 4-0 with the win, allowing three hits and one run with four walks and six strikeouts in 6.2 IP. Senior Evan Chamberlain (Amston, Conn./RHAM) worked the ninth to earn his third save of the season.  

The No. 1 seed in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament, the Lyons begin defense of their crown on Saturday with an 11 a.m. contest against No. 4 seed WPI at 11 a.m. The Warriors head to North Dartmouth, Mass. for a pair of games with UMass Dartmouth Saturday at noon.
