NORTON, Mass. – Junior Corey Laliberte (Fall River, Mass./Durfee) tossed seven shutout innings to lead the No. 9 Wheaton College baseball team to a 5-0 win over UMass Boston in non-conference baseball action Wednesday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.
Junior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) went 3-for-4 with two RBI for the Lyons, who improved to 33-7 on the season. Laliberte, meanwhile, scattered six hits, did not walk a batter, and struck out one to move to 3-2 on the season.
Senior Hal Landers (Salem, N.H./Salem) opened the bottom of the first with a double and scored on a groundout by Ryan to give the Lyons an early 1-0 lead. Wheaton doubled its lead in the fourth when Ryan laced a one-out double and scored on an RBI single by freshman Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical).
The Lyons tacked on a pair of runs in the fifth to extend their lead to 4-0. Freshman Justin Connor (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) doubled and came around to score on a sac fly off the bat of Landers. Junior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) followed with a walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Ryan. In the seventh, Jensen led off with a double and later scored on a balk to cap the scoring.
Freshman Kyle Szatrowski (Agawam, Mass./Agawam) started on the bump for the Beacons and surrendered six hits and four runs in five innings of work. He walked two and struck out two to fall to 1-3 on the season.
De la Cruz finished the afternoon with two hits while Jensen, Ryan, and senior John Keating (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) each stole a base for the Lyons. Sophomore Jamill Moquette (Boston, Mass./Madison Park Technical Vocational) recorded three hits for the Beacons (17-19-1).
The Lyons return to action tomorrow afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. contest against Rhode Island College. The Beacons play a pair against the Anchormen Friday beginning at noon in Providence.
