Gibbons strikes out six in game two
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wheaton College baseball team, ranked no.10 overall in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, split a pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games against Coast Guard Academy by scores of 7-3 and 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Nitchman Field.
Coast Guard 7, Wheaton 3
Senior Riley Beecher (Elgin, Texas) scattered eight hits and three runs (all earned) over six innings pitched, three walks and three strikeouts to bump his record to 4-1 on the season. Classmate Tyler Vieira (Dumfries, Va.) pitched a scoreless seventh for the Bears.
Junior right-hander Nick Filloramo (Rochester, Mass./Old Rochester Regional) took the loss on five innings, eight hits, seven runs (all earned), two walks and one strikeout. Freshman Steve Consiglio (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) surrendered one hit and zero runs in one inning pitched.
Wheaton grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first as sophomore Apolinar De la Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) lined an RBI single to center field scoring senior Sean Ryan (Norton, Mass./Norton) from second base.
Coast Guard responded with four runs on four hits, one error and one runner left on base in the second inning. Sophomore Matt Hanks (Chesapeake, Va.) highlighted the frame with a two-run double to right-center field. The Bears added two runs in the fourth as senior Eric Gerken (Tampa, Fla.) notched an RBI single to center field and classmate Joe Petry (Worcester, Mass.) scampered home on a wild pitch.
De la Cruz, senior Eric Jensen (Gorham, N.H./Gorham) and freshman Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) all had multi-hit games for the Lyons. Jensen drove in Wheaton's final run in the fifth plating Ryan with a base knock to right-center.
Wheaton 2, Coast Guard 0
Sophomore Mike Gibbons (Simsbury, Conn./Avon Old Farms School) hurled seven innings of shutout baseball, yielded three hits, no walks and struck out a game-high six batters to pick up his first win of the season (1-1). Freshman Eric Dumas (Brookline, Mass./Brookline) tossed a clean eighth and junior closer Ryan Grant (Easton, Mass./Avon Old Farms School) shut the door in the ninth for his sixth save of the season in 11 appearances.
Coast Guard senior Derek Petty (Parker, Colo.) was handed the loss on eight innings pitched, eight hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and two strikeouts.
In the top of the third, sophomore Tyler Contillo (Montville, Conn./Montville) put the Lyons ahead 1-0 with a single to left field plating Lavanchy. Wheaton added an insurance run in the sixth with a sac fly to left field off the bat of De la Cruz.
Wheaton's pitching staff limited the Bears to three hits total in the game and only allowed two baserunners to reach scoring position in the second and fifth innings.
Lavanchy went 3-for-6 (.500) at the plate with two runs scored and one double. Contillo was 3-for-7 (.429) with one run scored and one RBI while De la Cruz posted a .400 batting average and drove in two runs.
Wheaton (16-6, 10-1 NEWMAC) hosts Trinity College for a non-conference game on Monday, April 5 at Sidell Stadium with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Coast Guard (14-10, 6-5 NEWMAC), who snapped the Lyons 21-game winning streak against NEWMAC opponents (including tournament play) in game one, travels to Westfield State for a non-conference matchup on Monday at 3:30 p.m.
