NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team, ranked No. 24 in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, lost to Salem State University, 4-3, in non-conference action on Thursday night at Sidell Stadium.
Vikings' senior Ed Deren (Westford, Mass./Westford) earned his first victory of the season out of the bullpen throwing eight innings, yielding ten hits, one run (earned) and one walk alongside three strikeouts. Sophomore Pete Gonski (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) was handed the no-decision on one inning, two runs (both earned) and one free pass.
Wheaton sophomore starter Jared Clement (Wrentham, Mass./Saint Sebastian's) picked up the no-decision for the Lyons in four innings of work, seven hits, three runs (two earned) and one walk. Senior Ryan Grant (Easton, Mass./Avon Old Farms) was tagged with the loss allowing one run (earned), two hits and a walk in the top of the ninth.
Tied 3-3 in the top of the ninth, Salem State senior Brett Cahill (Gloucester, Mass./Gloucester) led off the frame with a single to center and promptly stole second base to put a runner in scoring position with no outs. Classmate Kyle McElroy (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) followed with a sacrifice bunt to the pitcher putting the go-ahead run 90-feet away.
Junior Ryan Beliveau (Lynn, Mass./St. Mary's) was then intentionally walked to set up a potential double play scenario. Senior Mike Lamothe (Beverly, Mass./Pingree) went on to drive in the eventual game-winning run with a bunt down the third base line just under the Lyons' third baseman's glove.
Wheaton claimed an early 3-0 advantage after the conclusion of the second inning as junior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) delivered an RBI single to right field and sophomore Brett Fontaine (Newburyport, Mass./Newburyport) lifted a sac fly to center in the first. Freshman Joshua LaJoie (Somers, Conn./Avon Old Farms) also had a fielder's choice in the second inning, while De La Cruz notched his 150th career hit (111 games) with a base knock to left in the same frame.
Beliveau answered with a run-producing single down the left field line in the third, while Cahill had an RBI single up the middle and McElroy plated a run with a single to left-center, both coming in the fifth inning with no outs. Bisceglia kept the scored tied at 3-3 after relieving Clement with three groundouts.
