Silvestro knocks in four runs for the Lyons
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team, ranked No. 23 in the latest D3baseball.com Top 25 poll, earned an 11-6 victory over Emerson College in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup on Friday evening at Sidell Stadium.
Wheaton sophomore Jared Clement (Wrentham, Mass./Saint Sebastian's) picked up the win (2-0) over five innings of work, yielding six hits, five runs (all earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.
Emerson senior Andy Brightman (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) suffered the loss (0-4) on five innings, nine hits, nine runs (all earned) and eight walks.
Trailing 2-0 after the first half inning of play, the Lyons responded with four runs as junior Mike Bisceglia (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown), sophomore Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) and senior Kevin Foley (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug) all had RBI singles through the right side of the infield. Freshman Joshua LaJoie (Somers, Conn./Avon Old Farms) capped the scoring as he was hit-by-a-pitch with the bases loaded.
Silvestro made it 6-2 in the second with a two-run single to right field, before Emerson struck for three runs in the fifth to bring the game within a run. Junior Zach Dean (Vero Beach, Fla./Vero Beach) highlighted Emerson's three-run inning with an RBI double to left-center. The Lions scored their other two runs on a wild pitch and a sacrifice bunt.
Wheaton put the game away over the next three innings with five runs on six hits.
Justin Peluso (North Reading, Mass./Saint John's Prep) had a two-run double down the left field line in the fifth, while junior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) knocked home a run with a base hit to center. In the sixth, LaJoie smacked an RBI double to left-center scoring Peluso and Silvestro lifted a sac fly to left field in the seventh.
Silvestro finished the contest going 2-for-4 at the plate with one run scored and a game-high four RBI. Peluso and LaJoie both collected multi-hit games. Emerson freshman Mitch Moormann (Hollywood, Fla./Chaminade-Madonna) and senior Cal Ciarcia (Dennis, Mass./Sacred Heart) both notched four hits apiece in the loss.
Wheaton (20-7-1, 9-2 NEWMAC) travels to Emerson (3-18, 1-9 NEWMAC) for a NEWMAC doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 1:45 p.m.
