St. Joseph’s (Me.) Takes Two From Wheaton

Lyons to play Webster tomorrow at 4 p.m.

AUBURNDALE, Fla.  – The Wheaton College baseball team dropped both games in its doubleheader matchup against St. Joseph's (Maine) on Saturday evening at Etherton Field by scores of 14-6 and 3-2.

Monks' sophomore right-handed reliever Nick Malatesta (Wrentham, Mass./King Philip) picked up his first victory of the season out of the pen throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings alongside one hit, one walk and a game-high six strikeouts.

Senior starter Alex Valenti (Lawrence, Mass./Central Catholic) earned the no-decision on 4 1/3 innings, nine hits, six runs (all earned), one walk and five punchouts. First-year Steven Albert (Worcester, Mass./Saint Peter Marian) worked the final 1 1/3 innings of the game allowing just one hit.

Wheaton first-year Brady Furdon (Natick, Mass./Natick) took the loss on two innings, four hits, six runs (four earned), four walks and two strikeouts. Classmate Jimmy Gowen (Brielle, N.J./St. Rose) was effective out of the pen tossing 2 1/3 scoreless innings, while yielding four hits and one unearned run.

Trailing 9-1 in the top of the fifth, the Lyons with a five-run frame to pull within striking distance at 9-6. Senior Zach Bombard (Belchertown, Mass./Cathedral) got the offense going with a leadoff single up the middle, while sophomore Joseph Santigate (State Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) followed with a single through the left side to put runners at first and second.

Junior Jimmy Smith (Worcester, Mass./Saint John's) smacked a single to left field to load the bases and sophomore Joshua LaJoie (Somers, Conn./Avon Old Farms) knocked in his second run of the season with a base knock to left to make it 9-2.

Junior Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./B.C. High) and senior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) plated runs on a single down the right field line and a ground out, respectively, while classmate Tyler Contillo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) notched a two-run double to left center to cap the scoring in the frame.

St. Joseph's (Me.) responded with five runs in bottom half of the sixth to put the game away highlighted by a two-run double down the left field line from sophomore Taylor Black (Cardiff by the Sea, Calif./Merrimack).

Junior right-hander Riley Cox (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) claimed the victory in relief for the Monks on one inning pitched, one hit and two strikeouts. Classmate Corey McNamara (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) secured his first save of the season over two innings pitched to go with four strikeouts.

Senior left-handed starter Dan Meeken (Marshfield, Mass./Marshfield) was handed on the no-decision on six innings of work, five hits, two runs (both earned), two walks and a game-high seven strikeouts.

Wheaton first-year Dan Southerland (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) received the no-decision in his first career start despite throwing 6 2/3 innings, while yielding five hits, two runs (all earned) and no walks. Southerland also matched Meeken in strikeouts with seven.

Junior reliever Jordan Jenkins (Scituate, Mass./Norwell) suffered the hard-luck loss on one inning pitched, one hit and one run (earned). In his second collegiate appearance, first-year right-hander Cody Kozin (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) gave up just one hit and struck out one batter in the ninth.

The Lyons led 2-0 through the first three innings of play as sophomore Thomas Landry (Hingham, Mass./B.C. High) plated a run with a single through the left side in the second and junior Mike Beneduce (North Kingstown, R.I./Moses Brown School) lifted a sacrifice fly to right field.

Southerland held the Monks in check over the next two innings but St. Joseph's (Me.) eventually scratched home a run on an RBI ground out in the sixth and the tying run in the seventh off an RBI base knock by Dan Donovan (Lynn, Mass./St. Mary's).

Junior Taylor Reuillard (Biddeford, Maine/Biddeford) drove in the game-winning run in the eighth on a sharp single to right field to bring in Lincoln Sanborn (Standish, Maine/Bonny Eagle).

Wheaton (1-2) takes on Webster tomorrow in Auburndale, Fla. at 4 p.m. St. Joseph's of Maine (3-5) plays Fontbonne in Winter Haven, Fla. tomorrow at 1 p.m.
