Wheaton Turns Back Husson, 9-2

Clement takes one-hitter into eighth inning

LEESBURG, Fla. – Junior right-hander Jared Clement (Wrentham, Mass./Saint Sebastian's) took a one-hitter into the eighth inning to guide the Wheaton College baseball team to a 9-2 victory over Husson University in non-conference action at Pat Thomas Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Clement picked up his second win of the season, in as many starts, on seven innings pitched, two hits, two runs (both earned), zero walks and three strikeouts. Clement gave up both of his hits to Jordan Carter (Ellsworth, Maine/Ellsworth) in the contest as the senior catcher notched a leadoff double to left field in the third and two-run home run to left field in the eighth.

Junior left-handed reliever Mike Koperniak (Adams, Mass./Hoosac Valley) wrapped up the eighth with a pair of ground balls and a fly out to right field, while first-year Cody Kozin (Storrs, Conn./E.O. Smith) completed the ninth inducing one ground out and two fly outs. Both relievers gave up just one hit in their respective appearances out of the pen.

Husson senior starter Dennis O'Neil (Mount Desert, Maine/Mount Desert Island) suffered the loss yielding nine hits, six runs (five earned) and one walk to go with one strikeout in seven innings of work.

Sophomore left fielder Zachary Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass./Northampton) gave Wheaton a jolt offensively in the top of the second inning with a two-run shot over the right field wall to push the Lyons ahead on the scoreboard, 2-0.

In the bottom of the third inning, senior catcher Zach Horton (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) prevented Carter from scoring from third base for Wheaton as he snared a pitch that sailed behind a Husson right-handed hitter that looked destined for the backstop. Despite having a runner at third with one out, Clement jammed both right-handed hitters he faced to induce a pair of ground outs that both went 5-3.

The Lyons then added two runs in the fifth, seventh and eighth and one in the ninth on the way to the victory.

In the fifth, junior right fielder Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) drove in a run with a base hit through the right side of the infield, while Wheaton also saw another run score in the frame on a failed play at the plate.

Junior third baseman Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) and senior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) plated runs in the seventh as Silvestro notched an RBI single through the left side of the infield and De La Cruz lifted a sacrifice fly to left field to make it 6-0.

Horton added a fielder's choice RBI in the eighth, while senior second baseman Justin Peluso (North Reading, Mass./Saint John's Prep) also scored on the same play due to a throwing error.

Peluso capped the scoring for the Blue and White in the ninth with a run-producing base hit through the left side of the infield to drive in classmate Tyler Contillo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville).

Wheaton (4-3) plays Worcester State University in a doubleheader tomorrow in Auburndale, Florida at the Lake Myrtle Sports Park with game one slated for 3 p.m. Both games are scheduled for seven innings.
