LaJoie, Peluso & Silvestro combine for ten hits and five RBI in the win
AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Behind 16 hits and 6 2/3 innings pitched from right-handed starter Kyle Kasprzyk (East Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth), the Wheaton College baseball team posted a 7-2 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the final game of its spring break trip on Saturday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Sports Park.
Kasprzyk scattered nine hits, allowed just one run and no walks to go with three strikeouts to push his overall record to 2-0 on the season. Kasprzyk induced 12 ground outs in the game and also retired four out of seven leadoff hitters he faced in an inning to keep UMass Dartmouth's offense at bay.
Junior left-hander Michael Baryski (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) was effective in relief throwing 1 1/3 scoreless innings, while senior closer Mike Bisceglia (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown) only needed two pitches in the ninth to shut the door on his fourth save of the year.
Corsairs' junior right-handed starter George Bent (Barnstable, Mass./Barnstable) took the loss on 1 2/3 innings pitched, seven hits and four runs (all earned).
UMass Dartmouth threatened in the top of the first inning after senior first baseman Alberto Vasquez (Roxbury, Mass./O'Bryant) smacked a ground rule double to right center field to put runners at second and third with two outs, but Kasprzyk jammed the next batter he faced for a 4-3 ground out to end the scoring chance.
Wheaton countered with one run in the first and three runs in the second to take a 4-1 lead.
In the first, senior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) knocked home a run with a single to right field, while Justin Peluso (North Reading, Mass./Saint John's Prep) and Joshua LaJoie (Somers, Conn./Avon Old Farms) both had RBI base hits in the second. Sophomore catcher Joseph Santigate (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) also added a sacrifice fly in the second to cap the scoring in the three-run frame for the Lyons.
The Corsairs received a run-producing single to center from senior designated hitter Alex Newton (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) in the top of the second, which tied the game at 1-1 at the time.
Peluso tacked on another run in the fifth with an RBI single to left field and Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) drove in two more runs in the eighth with a hard-hit single through the right side of the infield to score Peluso and Santigate.
UMass Dartmouth scratched home another run in the ninth on a fielding error with the bases loaded with one out, but Bisceglia entered the contest and used only two pitches (both strikes) to roll over a game-ending 6-4-3 double play.
LaJoie finished the contest going 3-for-4 with one run, an RBI and an intentional walk, while Silvestro went 4-for-5 with two RBI. Peluso turned in a 3-for-4 performance from the eight-hole in the lineup alongside one run and two RBI.
Wheaton (6-4) is schedule to play Suffolk University on Friday, March 20 in its next matchup at 3:30 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (2-1) takes on St. Benedictine (Ill.) tomorrow in Lakeland, Florida at 5 p.m.
