Lyons move winning streak to six-straight games
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Wheaton College baseball team erased an early 2-1 deficit with seven runs in the fifth inning en route to a 10-4 win over the Coast Guard Academy Bears in a conference matchup on Tuesday evening.
Sophomore Michael Bruemmel (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) bumped his record to 3-1 on the season going five innings, while yielding three hits, two runs (both earned) and zero walks alongside three strikeouts. Junior Michael Baryski (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and senior Mike Bisceglia (New Boston, N.H./Goffstown) both pitched a pair of scoreless frames down the stretch to lock up the victory.
Senior Andrew Lucak (Gulf Breeze, Fla.) received the loss on two innings pitched, four hits, three runs (all earned) and one walk.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Wheaton's offense erupted for seven runs on eight hits, two errors and two runners left on base.
Senior Zach Bombard (Belchertown, Mass./Cathedral) evened the score with an RBI double to left field, while junior Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) gave the Lyons a 3-2 lead with an RBI infield single.
Wheaton then took a 4-2 advantage on a fielding error before senior Tyler Contillo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) drove in Silvestro with a base knock to center. After a pop out to third base was recorded for the second out of the inning, sophomore Joseph Santigate (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea), junior Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) and senior Justin Peluso (North Reading, Mass./Saint John's Prep) registered three-straight RBI singles to round out the scoring in the frame.
Coast Guard cut into the deficit with two runs in the sixth to make it 8-4 as junior Kyle Wood (Mt. Juliet, Tenn.) had an RBI single to center and sophomore Tim Duncan (Heath, Texas) brought home a run on a ground out to first.
The Lyons countered with solo runs in the eighth and ninth, while Baryski and Bisceglia only allowed one runner to reach scoring position from the seventh inning on to close out the win.
Wheaton (18-7, 12-2 NEWMAC) travels to Western New England University on Thursday for a non-conference game slated for 4 p.m. Coast Guard (12-9, 5-7 NEWMAC) hosts Emerson tomorrow in a conference matchup at 4 p.m.
