Lyons travel to Bridgewater State tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team defeated Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU), 25-3, in non-conference action on Wednesday evening at Sidell Stadium.
Junior reliever Michael Baryski (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) received the win out of the bullpen on two innings pitched, one run (earned), no walks and two strikeouts. Classmate Jared Clement (Wrentham, Mass./Saint Sebastian's) was handed a no-decision on four scoreless innings, two hits, and one free pass.
ECSU sophomore starter Orlando Gonzalez (Montville, Conn./Montville) took the loss yielding one hit and two unearned runs in one inning pitched.
In the bottom of the first inning, Wheaton took a 2-0 lead as junior Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) lifted a sacrifice fly to left field and senior Apolinar De La Cruz (Providence, R.I./Classical) notched a sacrifice fly to center to account for the scoring.
The Lyons went on to put the game out of reach in the third inning with 11 runs on eight hits, zero errors and two runners left on base. Junior Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) had a two-run double to left field to make the score 6-0, while Silvestro roped a two-run single to left field later in the frame to push the gap to 11-0.
Senior Tyler Contillo (Uncasville, Conn./Montville) had an RBI single through the right side of the infield (12-0) and Silvestro came around to score on a wild pitch to highlight the scoring in the 11-run frame for Wheaton.
ECSU broke open the shutout in the sixth as junior Chad Adams (Ware, Mass./Williston Northampton) lined an RBI single up the middle (16-1). Classmate Andrew Scully (Startford, Conn./Frank Bunnell) led off the frame with a single up the middle before senior Corey Keane (Tolland, Conn./Tolland) notched a hit through the heart of the defense as well to set up the RBI opportunity for Adams.
Silvestro finished the day going 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBI, while sophomore Zachary Goodwin-Boyd (Florence, Mass./Northampton) went 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBI. Classmate Joshua LaJoie (Somers, Conn./Avon Old Farms) also collected three hits and scored four times in the win. In total, the Blue and White compiled 20 hits including seven extra-base hits (6 doubles, 1 triple).
Wheaton (21-10) travels to Bridgewater State University tomorrow for a non-conference matchup at 3:30 p.m. ECSU (12-14) visits Westfield State University on Friday at 4 p.m. Today's 25-3 win for the Lyons matches the third-highest run total in a single-game in program history (three other occasions).
