Lyons continue solid play in summer leagues
NORTON, Mass. – Here is the latest Wheaton College baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the student-athletes within the program. This week's update all features some highlights from some Lyons in the pros.
Futures Collegiate Baseball League
Michael Bruemmel (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) was dominant in his only start on the week for the Worcester Bravehearts going six innings, while yielding two runs (one earned), three hits, and one walk alongside a season-high seven strikeouts in a no-decision against the Bristol Blues on June 27.
Bruemmel currently sports a 1-1 record with a 1.89 earned run average (ERA) in six games (two starts) over 19 innings pitched this summer. Bruemmel's strikeout-to-walk ratio is also at 18:6, which includes 13 strikeouts in his last two appearances, and his batting average against stands at .197.
Last season for the Brockton Rox, Bruemmel struck out an FCBL career-high eight batters in a 7-0 win over the Seacoast Mavericks on August 7.
Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) compiled five hits (5-for-14/.357), two RBI, one run, a walk and one stolen base in four games for Wachusett Dirt Dawgs. Silvestro is currently hitting .292/.313/.415 with seven runs scored, two doubles, two home runs, 15 RBI, two walks and three stolen bases. Silvestro also is tied for third among all RBI leaders in the league.
New England Collegiate Baseball League
Rising sophomore Dan Southerland (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) recently transitioned from the Cranberry League to the NECBL to pitch for the New Bedford Bay Sox and has shined for the Bay Sox since his arrival on June 27.
In two appearances on the season, Southerland is 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA and two strikeouts on 3 2/3 innings pitched. Southerland picked up his lone win of the summer against the Newport Gulls, one of the most storied summer league franchises in the country, on June 29.

In The Pros
Chris Denorfia '02 stayed red-hot last week going 6-for-14 (.429) with two doubles and one RBI for the Chicago Cubs. On June 25, Denorfia also made a fantastic diving catch stealing a hit from Los Angeles Dodger Justin Turner in the process. To watch the video click here: Denorfia Steals A Hit.
