Lyons continue to shine

NORTON, Mass. – Here is the latest Wheaton College baseball summer update with highlights on the progress of the student-athletes within the program. This week's update all features some highlights from some Lyons in the pros.

Futures Collegiate Baseball League

In his only start of the week, rising junior Michael Bruemmel (Bridgewater, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham) guided the Worcester Bravehearts to a 5-4 win over the Pittsfield Suns despite receiving a no-decision by tossing five innings alongside five strikeouts. Bruemmel now sports a 1-2 record, a 3.45 earned run average (ERA), and 27 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings pitched.

Rising senior Justin Silvestro (Waltham, Mass./BC High) continues to swing a hot bat for the Wachusett Dirt Dawgs with a .283/.327/.467 slash line to go along with 26 hits, 13 runs, five doubles, four home runs, 20 RBI and four stolen bases. New England Collegiate Baseball League

Rising sophomore Dan Southerland (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) struck out one batter in a scoreless inning for the New Bedford Bay Sox against the Ocean State Waves to pick up his first hold of the season. Southerland currently sits first among all hurlers on the Bay Sox pitching staff in the first pitch strike percentage category at .750.

In The Pros

Chris Denorfia '02 continued to make his presence known last week for the Chicago Cubs by throwing out Melky Cabrera at home plate with a beautiful throw from left field. To watch that video click here: Denorfia Throws Out Melky.

Mike Gibbons made one start on the week for the Single-A Savannah Sand Gnats against the Lexington Legends on July 9. Gibbons went six innings, yielded six hits, three runs and one walk alongside four strikeouts in the loss. To view the box score and recap from the game click here: Box Score | Recap.


Kyle Kasprzyk (East Falmouth, Mass./East Falmouth), Matt Lavanchy (Walpole, Mass./Walpole), Brady Furdon (Natick, Mass./Natick), and Mike Baryski (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) all played in the Cranberry League vs. Yawkey League All-Star Game last weekend.
