BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team defeated the Bridgewater State University Bears, 3-2, on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Park.
The Lyons advance to 8-3 with the win, while the Bears fall to 6-7.
Wheaton put runs on the board first in the third inning when senior Jimmy Smith led off the inning with a base hit then proceeded to steal second and scored on an RBI single from junior Joshua LaJoie. Senior Matt Lavanchy added his own hit to the inning that put two runners on and it was junior Zachary Goodwin-Boyd and first-year Tyler Walsh who advanced on base after a hit by pitch to bring in the second run.
The Bears stole the momentum back in the bottom half off a single, walk and error to tie up the game before the Lyons could get back to the plate.
It was the top of the fourth inning where Wheaton would collect the winning run. Smith started the rally with a bunt single and moved to second on a wild pitch followed by senior Justin Silvestro who was walked that allowed Smith to have the go-ahead run.
Sophomore Brady Furdon (2-1) tallied the win for Wheaton first five innings to pick up the win for the Lyons with two strikeouts.
Wheaton wrapped up the afternoon with eight hits.
The Lyons host Suffolk University (8-3) on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in Wheaton's home opener at James V. Sidell Stadium.
