NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team opened play at Sidell Stadium on Friday afternoon hosting the Suffolk Rams. The Rams earned an 8-5 victory.
Wheaton falls to 8-4 on the season, while Suffolk improves to 9-3 overall.
The Rams took control of the game early. With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the first, Suffolks first run came in on a double-play. In the next at bat, a single up the middle drove in the second run, while the final two came in on a double to center.
Wheaton was able to get its offense going in the bottom of the second, with two runs coming in to score on a two-out double by Joey Santigate. Both Zachary Goodwin-Boyd and Mike Beneduce scored on the play.
The Lyons made things interesting in the fifth inning when Goodwin-Boyd started the inning with a double, before Santigate reached on a walk. The duo moved shortly later on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Ruocco. Jimmy Smith earned an RBI with the next at bat with a single up the right side.
Wheaton knotted the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on another Smith RBI single.
The next inning however, saw the Rams knock in four more runs to take an 8-4 advantage.
The Lyons open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, March 26 at 12 p.m. for game one of the double-header.
