Baseball Falls 8-5 to Suffolk in Home Opener

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team opened play at Sidell Stadium on Friday afternoon hosting the Suffolk Rams.  The Rams earned an 8-5 victory.

Wheaton falls to 8-4 on the season, while Suffolk improves to 9-3 overall.

The Rams took control of the game early. With the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the first, Suffolks first run came in on a double-play. In the next at bat, a single up the middle drove in the second run, while the final two came in on a double to center.

Wheaton was able to get its offense going in the bottom of the second, with two runs coming in to score on a two-out double by Joey Santigate. Both Zachary Goodwin-Boyd and Mike Beneduce scored on the play.

The Lyons made things interesting in the fifth inning when Goodwin-Boyd started the inning with a double, before Santigate reached on a walk. The duo moved shortly later on a sacrifice bunt by Chris Ruocco. Jimmy Smith earned an RBI with the next at bat with a single up the right side.

Wheaton knotted the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh on another Smith RBI single.

The next inning however, saw the Rams knock in four more runs to take an 8-4 advantage.

Wheaton managed to score one final run in the ninth inning with Justin Sellar's earning an RBI on a single through the right side, scoring Tyler Walsh.

The Lyons open New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, March 26 at 12 p.m. for game one of the double-header.
