NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball team defeated the Fitchburg State Falcons 23-7 on Monday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.
With the win the Lyons improve to 16-6 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 8-14.
First-year Tommy Larason collected his second win of the season after pitching five complete innings, surrendering just one hit, while striking out two.
Senior Jimmy Smith ended the day 2-for-3 from the plate with a walk and two RBI. Chris Ruocco and Matt Lavanchy also ended the day 2-for-3, while Ryan McKeon went a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI and a walk. Joey Santigate, who started the day behind the plate, concluded the contest 3-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Wheaton plated six runs in the first inning with Silvestro, Tyler Walsh, Zachary Goodwin-Boyd and Willy Boyd all earning RBI's. The Lyons then put up 10 more runs in the fourth inning to take a 16-0 lead. The inning was highlighted by homeruns from Santigate and Silvestro, as well as doubles by Smith and Joshua LaJoie.
The Lyons added four more runs to their lead before the Falcons put one on the board. Brendan Cutler knocked in Fitchburg States first run with an RBI single down the right field line, scoring Andrew Mooney.
The Falcons put together a six run eighth inning with some help from the Lyons, but that would be as close as they would get.
Wheaton returns to the field on Tuesday, April 12 for a 3:30 p.m. New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at the Coast Guard Academy.
