MANSFIELD, Conn. – The Wheaton College offense racked up 18 hits in a 10-1 rout of Eastern Connecticut State in a non-conference contest at Eastern Stadium.
The win moves Wheaton to 28-11 on the season, while Eastern Connecticut State falls to 19-14.
Seven Lyons took the mound in the win, as the team prepares for its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Championship double-header against Babson. First-year Tommy Larason started the contest, giving up one run on two hits in two innings of action.
Senior Jordan Jenkins was credited with the win, his fourth of the season, after coming in in the fifth and pitching two flawless innings.
It was the Lyon offense who provided all the fireworks, spotting the pitching staff an 8-0 lead after an inning and a half. Wheaton sent nine batters to the plate in its six run second inning.
The Warriors lone run came home in the bottom half of the second inning.
Wheaton concluded the scoring in the top of the eighth.
Junior Joshua LaJoie had a strong outing for the Lyons, finishing the game 4-of-5 from the plate. LaJoie started the game with three consecutive singles, before capping off the day with a lead-off double in the eighth.
Senior Jimmy Smith finished 3-for-5 from the plate, while Matt Lavanchy and Joey Santigate both finished 2-of-4. Lavanchy, who finished with a game-high three RBI, picked up two of them in the second inning with his 10th double of the season. Coming in as a pinch hitter, Jared Sharkey also collected an RBI double, knocking in Justin Silvestro in the eighth.
Wheaton hosts Babson on Saturday, May 7 for the NEWMAC Championship. The two sides are set to play a double-header in the best of three series, with the first game beginning at 12 p.m. Game three will be held on Sunday, May 8 at Sidell Stadium if necessary.
