AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Wheaton College baseball team fell to Webster University 3-1 Saturday afternoon at the RussMatt Invitational.
Senior Mike Bruemmel had a strong outing for the Lyons, pitching 8.1 innings, striking out six, while surrendering just four hits. Josh Fleming picked up the complete game win for the Worloks, striking out 11, while also giving up just four hits.
Wheaton struck first, taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning on an RBI single from Matt Cook. Ruocco, who came around to score, led off the inning with a single to deep short, before moving to second on a sacrifice bunt from Josh LaJoie. Cook drove Ruocco home seconds later with single through the right side.
Kyle Uhrich countered in the top of the fourth with an RBI single through the left side that brought home Brandon Smit. The Worloks took the lead in the seventh with a lead-off homerun to left field by Ulrich.
The Lyons had a chance to tie the game in the eighth with Twomey leading off the inning with a single to third, before advancing to second on a throwing error by Webster. Ruocco moved Twomey to third with a well placed bunt, but that would be as far as the sophomore pinch hitter would get.
The Worloks added one more in the ninth before Fleming retired the Lyons in the bottom half of the inning.
Wheaton returns to the field on Sunday, March 12 against St. Scholastica at 9:30 a.m.
