Baseball Splits Series with St. Thomas (Minn.)

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The Wheaton College baseball team split its final day of the RussMatt Invitational, defeating St. Thomas (Minn.) 11-1 in game one of the double-header (seven innings), while the Tommies won game two 11-4. 

GAME ONE: St. Thomas 1 - Wheaton 11 (seven innings)
Wheaton surrendered just one run in the top of the first before plating at least one run in five straight innings.

Brady Furdon got the start for the Lyons, pitching seven complete innings, giving up just five hits, while also striking out five.  

After falling behind early, the Lyons responded with five runs in their half of the first, starting with a bases loaded walk to Tyler Walsh that allowed Nick Raposo leisurely come home. Joey Santigate followed the walk with an RBI single to short, while both Walsh and Casey Twomey came home moments later on a passed ball. Ty Calabro knocked in the final run of the inning with a single through the right side that sent Santigate home. 

Sharkey came around to score in the second inning on a Twomey single, while Josh LaJoie knocked in Zach Goodwin-Boyd in the third. Leading 7-1, Wheaton added another run in the fourth. 

The Lyons concluded the scoring in the fifth with Raposo picking up a two RBI double to center that sent Calabro and LaJoie home. Calabro led off the inning with a double of his own, while LaJoie reached on a walk. Raposo came home later in the inning on a passed ball. 

GAME TWO: Wheaton 4 - St. Thomas 11 (seven innings)
The Lyons scored four runs on three hits to start game two, before being held to just three hits the rest of the way. 

With runners at first and second, Twomey hit the ball to deep center, knocking in Raposo and Sharkey, while legging out a triple. With two outs and the bases now loaded, Jimmy Gianquitti doubled down the right field line allowing Walsh and Twomey to score. 

The Tommies countered in the bottom of the second with three runs, before tying the contest in the fourth. St. Thomas went on to score three runs in the fifth before plating four more in the sixth. 

Wheaton returns to the field Tuesday, March 21 at Endicott for a 4 p.m. contest.
