Lyons Split Double Header at Babson

NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College baseball team picked up a 7-3 win over Babson College Saturday afternoon in game two of the three game New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series. The Beavers then won the final game 6-4 to win the series.

Dan Southerland picked up his second win of the season, pitching 6.2 innings for the Lyons, striking out four, while giving up just one run on five hits. Joe Bongiovanni came in to relieve Southerland in the seventh, pitching 2.1 innings, giving up two runs on five hits.

Teddy Carey collected the loss for the Beavers after 5.1 innings of work, giving up six runs on nine hits, striking out four.

Babson helped put Wheaton ahead early, giving the Lyons leadoff batter, Josh LaJoie, a free pass on a throwing error. The error would come back to hurt the Beavers with LaJoie scoring on a two-out RBI single from Jared Sharkey.

The Beavers equalized in the bottom half of the second with Nicholas Browne scoring on a single up the middle from Sean Harrington.

Tyler Walsh earned the lead back for the Lyons, knocking in Zach Goodwin-Boyd with a single up the middle. Goodwin-Boyd started the inning with a single to third, before making his way to second on a wild pitch and eventually third on a sacrifice bunt from Joey Santigate.

Wheaton took a 4-1 advantage in the top of the fifth with Chris Ruocco and LaJoie both coming around to score. The Lyons tacked on two more in the top of the next inning, starting with an RBI single to right center from Ruocco. Walsh came around to score on the play after leading off the inning with a double to left center. A bases loaded walk to first-year Nick Raposo sent Ty Calabro home for the final run.

LaJoie took the first pitch he faced in the seventh off his body with the bases loaded, allowing Santigate to come home on the play.

Facing a 7-1 deficit, the Beavers managed to plate two runs in the bottom half of the eighth with Jack Halpin and Ryan Arena scoring. Babson tried to add more runs to the board in the ninth with Jake Weiss and Adam Ayala reaching base before the Lyons recorded three straight outs. 

The Beavers scored a run in each of the first three innings to take an early 3-0 lead. Wheaton tied the contest in the sixth Raposo, Sharkey and Goodwin-Boyd all coming around to score. A fielding error by the Beavers allowed Raposo, who reached on a walk, to come around. Back-to-back RBI singles from Walsh and Calabro scored the final two runs. 

A two-run home run and an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh earned the lead back for Babson. 

The Lyons managed to earn a run back in the ninth on a a two-out RBI single from Raposo, but Wheaton was unable to score anymore. 

Jimmy Gowen picked up his first loss of the season after coming in to relieve Mike Bruemmel in the sixth. Raposo ended the contest with two of the Lyons six hits. 

The Lyons return to action on Sunday, April 9 at Amherst for a 3:30 p.m. contest.
