DARTMOUTH, Mass. - The Wheaton College baseball used a three run second inning to defeat UMass.-Dartmouth on the road Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference battle.
Mike Bruemmel collected the win after pitching six complete innings, which saw the senior strikout a season high nine batters, while giving up five runs on nine hits. Jimmy Gowen, Zach Pipa and Paul McGeehan cloed out the game.
Junior Chris Ruocco started the scoring in the second inning with the first of his two RBI's, drilling a double down the left field line that scored Casey Twomey. Ruocco came around to score later in the inning on an RBI single from first-year Nick Raposo. A throwing error by the Corsairs allowed Josh LaJoie to cross the plate to end the scoring.
UMass.-Dartmouth earned a run back in the bottom half of the inning on a single to third from Zach Courier.
Wheaton responded with a five run third inning with Ruocco once again getting the offense started. Ruocco knocked in Tyler Walsh with a bases loaded single to short. LaJoie followed with a two-RBI single to right that brought in Twomey and Josh Trybuch. Ruocco and LaJoie rounded out the scoring with another RBI single from Raposo.
A double to left center from Kenny Michael doubled the UMass score, making it an 8-2 contest. Joey Santigate hit an RBI double of his own to left field, bringing Twomey home in the fifth. Raposo once again ended the scoring with his third RBI single of the contest.
Erick Ramirez homered to left in the bottom half of the inning for UMass., picking up Nate Tellier on the bomb.
Zach Goodwin-Boyd concluded the scoring for the Lyons, on a throwing error by the UMass.-Dartmouth pitcher. The senior led off the inning with a walk.
The Corsairs knocked in one more run in both the sixth and ninth innings.
Wheaton is set to conclude its season on Wednesday, May 4 at Eastern Connecticut State for a 7 p.m. contest.
