Baseball Defeats No. 15 Keystone 7-4; Beat Ripon After Six

GAME ONE: Wheaton 7 - No. 15 Keystone 4

RECORDS: Wheaton (6-3, 0-0 NEWMAC) - Keystone (3-4)

LOCATION: Auburndale, Fla. (Lake Myrtle #8)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The No. 25 Wheaton College baseball team broke a 4-4 deadlock in the bottom of the eighth on a Jared Sharkey in the park home run that plated three runs, earning the Lyons a 7-4 win over No. 15 Keystone State in game eight of the RussMatt Invitational. 
  • Wheaton took the lead in the bottom of the second with help from Keystone who hit Conor Gammond with a pitch before committed two errors that resulted in the Lyons baserunners. Gammond came around to score on an error by the Giant first baseman before Nick Raposo came around on an error by the second baseman. 
  • After Keystone tied the game in the top of the third, the Lyons took it back in the fourth with Quinn Krais scoring on an RBI groundout from Raposo. 
  • The Giants took the lead in the top of the sixth with two runs coming in, making it a 4-3 contest. 
  • Wheaton tied things at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI triple to deep center field from Raposo that scored Krais. 
  • Sharkey continued his stellar senior campaign in the bottom of the eighth, this time with an in the park home run. The senior hammered the ball past a diving center fielder, allowing it to roll to the fence, giving Raposo and Stephen Quigley time to come home. Sharkey raced around the bases, safely making it home before the throw in.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The No. 25 Wheaton College baseball team ended the RussMatt Invitational with a 3-1 win over Ripon after just five and a half innings due to a rain storm that halted play. 
  • Nick Raposo paced the offense with a 2-for-3 performance from the plate, while Bryant Salkind finished 2-for-2 with an RBI. 
  • Reigning New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Baseball Rookie of the Year, Gavin Reily, made his first appearance of the season throwing two complete innings, giving up no hits, while striking out one. 
  • Josh Roberge made his first collegiate appearance, coming in in the third inning, pitching two complete, en route to the first win of his career. The sophomore gave up just one hit while striking out two and walking one. 
  • Zach Pipa was credited with a save after two innings of work. 
  • Wheaton collected a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, starting with a two-run double down the right-field line from Sharkey that plated Raposo and first-year Jacob Studley. The final run came in just moments later on a single up the middle from Salkind. 
  • Ripon earned a run back in the top of the sixth with a triple down the right field line that brought in Jacob Pankratz. 
  • The rain began to come down during the top of the sixth inning and progressively came down harder in between innings, forcing the game to be called complete with the Lyons earning the victory.
