GAME ONE: Wheaton 5 - Coast Guard 0

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College baseball team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action with a 5-0 win over the Bears of the Coast Guard Academy Sunday afternoon at Sidell Stadium.
  • Sophomore Paul Prue earned his second win of the season after giving up just four hits in 7.1 innings of work, which saw the lefty strikeout six and walked just two. Zach Clesas closed out the game for the Lyons without allowing a hit in 1.2 innings of work. 
  • Nick Raposo led the Lyons at the plate with two hits, which included a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. Quinn Krais also finished the contest 2-for-4, while George Mulcahey finished 2-for-2. 
  • After three scoreless innings, Wheaton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth with a sacrifice fly from first-year Andrew Manni that plated Raposo. 
  • Raposo's two-run home run in the sixth and an RBI single from Mulcahey handed the Lyons a 4-0 advantage. 
  • Wheaton ended the scoring in the bottom of the seventh with another Raposo RBI.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Wheaton completed its sweep of Coast Guard in game two with a commanding 9-1 victory.
  • Gavin Reily got the start for the Lyons, pitching three solid innings, giving up just two hits, while striking out three. Griffin Young was credited with the win after replacing Reily in the top of the fourth, pitching three innings, surrendering just two hits and striking out four. 
  • The Lyons got a 2-for-2 performance from the plate from Jacob Studley, while Manni and Andrew Spirito each finished 3-for-5. 
  • A bases-loaded knock to second from Stephen Quigley allowed Spirito to come home in the bottom of the second, putting Wheaton ahead 1-0. 
  • Wheaton blew the game wide open in the third inning with seven runs coming around to score, starting with an RBI triple from Jared Sharkey. Sharkey came around to score later in the inning before a double from Spirito knocked in Manni. Leading 4-0, a bases-loaded walk to Quigley brought in the next run. Willy Boyd scored later in the inning and a two-run single from Studley brought in the final runs of the inning. 
  • Wheaton's final run of the game came in the seventh with a single up the middle from Raposo that knocked in Jimmy Gianquitti
  • The Bears put up their only run of the game in the top of the ninth with a solo home run to left from Jeremy Lhotka
