Baseball Remains Undefeated in NEWMAC Action with Sweep of Clark

GAME ONE: Wheaton 3 - Clark 2

RECORDS: Wheaton (12-4, 4-0 NEWMAC) - Clark (8-10, 0-3 NEWMAC)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College baseball team used two runs in the top of the sixth to push them past the Clark Cougars Saturday afternoon in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Granger Field.
  • The hosts used an RBI single to center in the second inning to take an early 1-0 lead. The Lyons countered in the top of the fourth with a solo home run by senior Jared Sharkey. The home run is the fourth of the season for the captain and the 13th of his career. 
  • A single run in the fifth temporarily gave the Cougars a 2-1 advantage. Wheaton countered with another home run, this time from first-year Jacob Studley. The home run is the first of Studley's career. Sharkey ended the scoring later in the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field that scored Nick Raposo
  • Raposo ended the game 2-for-3 with a walk, while Bryant Salkind finished 2-for-4. 
  • Paul Prue got the start for the Lyons, pitching five innings, giving up two runs on six hits, while striking out seven. Joshua Roberge got the win after three innings of work, while Zach Clesas got the save.

THE RUNDOWN:

  • After six scoreless innings that saw Wheaton manage just three hits, the Lyons finally broke through in the top of the seventh with an RBI single up the middle by George Mulcahey that plated Andrew Manni. Manni led off the inning with a triple to right center. 
  • Wheaton took a 3-0 lead in eighth with a two-RBI single up the middle from Manni that sent both Raposo and Studley home. Studley started the inning with a double to center, followed by an intentional walk to Raposo. The pair moved up a base courtesy of a single to right from Sharkey. 
  • The Cougars chipped away at the deficit in the bottom half of the eighth, plating two runs on two hits. 
  • Down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Clark started the inning with a double to left field by Derek Lefebvre, who would eventually move to third on a groundout. However, that's as close as the Cougars would get to plating the tying run after ending the inning with back-to-back groundouts to second. 
  • Griffin Young got the win for the Lyons after giving up just one run on five hits in 7.2 innings of work. The first-year also struck out eight of the 28 batters he faced. Clesas picked up another save.
