No. 25 Baseball Takes Final Two Games of NEWMAC Series Against No. 12 Babson

aGAME ONE: No. 25 Wheaton 9 - No. 12 Babson 3

RECORDS: Wheaton (16-6, 7-1 NEWMAC) - Babson (17-3, 7-1 NEWMAC)

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • The Wheaton College baseball team returned to it's New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) series against the Babson Beavers Saturday afternoon with the Lyons evening the series at 1-1 with a 9-3 win. 
  • Jared Sharkey went 4-for-5 with a double, a homer, three RBI and four runs scored to lead the Lyons. Junior Bryant Salkind and sophomore Brody Ashley also finished with four hits apiece and each drove in a run in support of first-year Griffin Young, who improved to 4-0 with the win. He allowed two runs while striking out seven over 5.2 innings before handing the ball to sophomore Joshua Roberge, who got the final 10 outs to earn his first save of the year.
  • Junior Jake Oliger homered and first-year Thomas Lapham went 2-for-4 as the Beavers' 16-game winning streak came to an end. Michael Nocchi took the loss after giving up five runs, four of them earned, on seven hits over 5.1 innings to fall to 2-1.
  • Babson took a 1-0 lead with Oliger's fourth home run of the season in the bottom of the second. 
  • Sharkey responded with a three-run shot to dead center in the top of the third, handing Wheaton a 3-1 advantage. 
  • Wheaton extended its lead in the fifth on a two-out single from Salkind that drove in Sharkey. 
  • After scoring again in the sixth, Wheaton used three errors to score three more times in the seventh to take an 8-2 lead. 
  • The Beavers added one more run in the eighth before Roberge got the Lyons out of the inning.

THE RUNDOWN:  

  • Wheaton ended the day with another win, this time defeating Babson 4-2 behind a solid outing from sophomore Gavin Reily who struck out four and allowed one run on seven hits in 5.0 innings to earn his first win of the year, and first-year Zach Clesas did not allow hit over the final two frames to record his third save.
  • First-year Stephen Quigley went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI, while senior Willy Boyd singled and scored twice to lead the Lyons. 
  • Edward Lehr went 3-for-4, Lapham singled twice, and both Harrington and Jaun drove in a run for Babson. Sophomore Peter Feinman took the loss after giving up three runs on five hits in 4.1 innings to fall to 2-2 on the season.
  • Like the first game, Babson captured an early lead, this time on an RBI single from Harrington in the bottom of the first. 
  • Wheaton responded with a three-run second inning, starting with a two-RBI double to right center from Quigley. Ashley knocked in the final run with an RBI single to left.
  • The Beavers earned a run back in the bottom of the eighth but had it countered by the Lyons in the ninth with Boyd coming around on a double-play knock from Ashley.
