Baseball Earns At-Large Bid to NCAA Tournament; Faces St. Joseph's of Maine in Opening Round

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College Baseball team, ranked No. 21 in the latest national poll, has earned one of 18 at-large bids in a field of 58 teams competing in the 2019 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. Wheaton last appeared in the national tournament in 2017 when they won the Mid-Atlantic Regional and advanced to the national championship round.

The Lyons have earned the second seed in the UMass-Boston regional and are set to take on the third seed, Saint Joseph's College of Maine (32-10) in a four-team double-elimination tournament at 2:30pm on Friday, May 17. The other matchup will consist of the top seed UMass-Boston (29-11) and No. 4 seed Baruch College (17-18).

With an overall record of 27-10 and a 15-2 NEWMAC record, Wheaton won its 18th regular season title in conference history this season before falling to NCAA tournament participants MIT and Babson in the NEWMAC tournament. The Lyons boasted six All-Conference selections this season including Athlete of the Year, Jared Sharkey and Rookie of the Year, Jacob Studley. For his efforts, Eric Podbelski was named the conference Coach of the Year.

Saint Joseph's of Maine makes their first tournament appearance since 2014 and 9th in the last 14 seasons, as they captured the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) championship over Johnson and Wales last Sunday. The Monks earned the GNAC tournament's No. 2 seed after going 13-3 in regular season play. Friday's matchup will be the 15th meeting between Wheaton and St. Joseph's, with the Lyons holding a 9-5 advantage in the series. The Monks, however, hold a 2-1 advantage in NCAA tournament matchups, with the last meeting in NCAA play between the two teams coming in 2011, which Wheaton won in an elimination game, 5-3.
