NCAA REGIONAL: No. 24 Wheaton Advances After 9-3 Defeat of St. Joseph's (ME)

BOSTON, Mass. - The No. 24 Wheaton College baseball team advanced to the winners bracket of the 2019 NCAA Baseball Regional Friday afternoon after picking up a 9-3 victory over St. Joseph's (Me.) at Monan Field on the UMass.-Boston campus.

Wheaton first-year Griffin Young picked up his first post-season win after a seven inning performance that saw the righty surrender just two runs on six hits. Young walked just three of the 29 batters he faced, while striking out eight for his sixth win of the season (6-1). Gavin Reily and Patrick Arter both came in in relief with Arter giving up one run.

Grayson Jennings was credited with the loss after 6.2 innings of work that saw him give up eight runs on 11 hits. Johnathan Flynn closed out the game, giving up one run on just one hit.

Bryant Salkind paced Wheaton's offense, finishing the contest 2-for-3 with a walk, while both Willy Boyd and Stephen Quigley concluded the contest 2-for-4.

Greg Emanuelson led the Monks with a 2-for-4 performance from the plate, while Drew Healey finished 2-for-5.

Wheaton got on the board first, posting a single run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single to right center from senior Conor Gammond. The Gammond single knocked in sophomore Brody Ashley who reached on a fielder's choice before stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch.

The Monks countered with two runs in the top of the next inning with an RBI single up the middle from Emanuelson, which was followed moments later by a sacrifice fly to right from Luke Johnson

Wheaton evened the game in the home half of the fourth with senior captain Jared Sharkey coming around on a wild pitch. The senior led off the inning with a single up the middle before moving to third on a single from Salkind.

After two and a half scoreless innings that saw just one hit combined, the Lyons blew the game wide open with a six run seventh inning. Salkind got the inning started with a walk, which was followed by back-to-back singles from George Mulcahey and Boyd. With the bases loaded and no outs, Quigley singled through the right side, sending Salkind and Mulcahey home. Boyd scored moments later on a double down the right field line from Ashley. Gammond flew out to right with the next at bat, giving Ashley enough time to tag up and make his way home. First-year Zach Demattio knocked in the final run of the inning with a two-out single up the middle that scored Nick Raposo

Wheaton plated its final run of the game courtesy of a single to right from Boyd that scored Mulcahey. The sophomore second baseman reached after being hit by a pitch, before stealing second.

St. Joseph's tried to come back in the ninth, putting runners on base courtesy of a walk and a hit by pitch. A wild pitch allowed both Monk base runners to move up before a single to short from Joey Murphy scored Johnson. Wheaton would get out of the inning moments later with a fly out, strike out and a ground out.
