GORHAM, Maine- The Wheaton College field hockey team struck first and held a one-goal lead until a little over 10 minutes into the second half on Sunday, only to see Husson University score six unanswered markers during the final day of the USM Invitational at the University of Southern Maine's Hannaford Field.
The Lyons fall to 0-2, while the Eagles, who needed overtime to get past Wheaton a year ago, stay unbeaten through two games.
Junior Eliza Kennedy (Madison, Conn./Tabor Academy) notched an unassisted goal 22:27 into play, while classmate Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) did her part in the cage in holding Husson at bay. The Eagles held a 13-8 edge in shots during the opening half, but Massengill turned aside seven shots to help preserve the shutout.
The second half, however, was a different story altogether, with Husson exploding for six goals, including five during a 13:05 span. Junior Sabrina Vaillancourt (Newport, Maine/Nokomis) recorded the game-tying and game-winning goals just 1:53 apart before scoring her third marker for the hat trick with less than 12 minutes remaining.
Husson filled up the stat sheet in holding advantages of 29-19 in shots and 17-5 in penalty corners. Massengill finished with 14 saves, while junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) posted two defensive saves. Eagle freshman Maicee Gustin (Dexter, Maine/Dexter Regional) had eight stops.
The Lyons return to Rehoboth for Tuesday's home opener against Anna Maria College set for 3:00 p.m.
