REHOBOTH, Mass.- The Wheaton College field hockey team had its 13-game series winning streak against Smith College come to an end on Saturday afternoon, as the homestanding Lyons dropped a 4-3 decision to the Pioneers in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at Faxon Field.
Wheaton slips to 2-9 on the season and 0-5 in league play, while Smith, which last defeated the Lyons in 1999, improves to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the NEWMAC.
After each team exchanged goals through the first 10:31, the visitors staked to a 3-1 advantage with 5:12 to play in the opening frame. With two minutes to go in the half, Wheaton junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) made the score 3-2 heading into the intermission.
Smith sophomore Kristen Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) notched what proved to be the game-winning goal 5:51 into the second stanza, scoring her second tally of the match and sixth of the season.
Nearly nine minutes later, Rocha tallied her sixth marker of the fall to again narrow Wheaton's deficit to one, but the hosts would get no closer. The Lyons followed their goal with two shots and a penalty corner but came away empty.
In the final seven-plus minutes, Smith fired off six shots and took three penalty corners, but Wheaton junior goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) turned aside each attempt in keeping the margin to one.
Massengill finished with 17 saves in defeat, while Pioneer freshman Nora Demick (Watertown, Mass./Beaver Country Day) had five stops in the win.
Smith filled up the stat sheet in holding advantages of 27-12 in shots and 14-2 in corners.
The Lyons return to action next Saturday when they host nationally-ranked Skidmore College. The Thoroughbreds are ranked fourth in the country by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
