Wheaton scores season high in goals, doubles up host Lasell, 6-3

NEWTON, Mass.- The Wheaton College field hockey team rattled off a season-high six goals during Sunday's non-conference game at Lasell College, as the Lyons scored the contest's first six goals en route to a 6-3 victory on Grellier Field.

Wheaton snapped its seven-game losing streak to improve to 3-10, while the Lasers dropped to 4-11.

Sophomore Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Lincoln School) tallied two times to lead Wheaton, upping her weekend total to three goals.  She collected the game-winning goal 22:10 into the opening half, which gave the visitors a 3-0 advantage.

Senior Alex Smith (Suffield, Conn./Suffield) found the back of the cage just 4:12 into action, while freshman Olivia Edwards (South Portland, Maine/South Portland) scored her first goal of the season in the 13th minute.  The hosts got on the board with 54 seconds to go before halftime, as the Lyons carried a 3-1 edge into the break.

Just 2:17 after the intermission, the hosts narrowed their deficit to one, but Wheaton responded in a big way with three goals in just under a three-minute span.  Senior Gillian Mann (Burlington, Vt./Williston Northampton School) scored at 41:24, junior Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) tallied 1:08 later, and McCann completed the flurry of scoring at 45:23.

Wheaton junior goalie Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) picked up the win with five saves in the first half, while sophomore Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) stopped four shots in the second frame.

Two Lasell goalkeepers combined for seven saves.  The Lyons took full advantage of their scoring opportunities, as they were outshot by a 19-16 count.  Wheaton took 10 of the game's 18 penalty corners.

The Lyons will next play a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) game on Tuesday at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) at 6:00 p.m.
