Lyons drop 3-1 decision to Union

REHOBOTH, Mass.- The Wheaton College field hockey team lost to Union College, 3-1, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon at Faxon Field.

The Lyons fall to 3-13 on the season, while the Dutchwomen improve to 7-8 overall.

Freshman Molly Cohen (Mamaroneck, N.Y./Mamaroneck) tallied a pair of goals for Union in the first half just 17 seconds apart to give the visitors a 2-0 lead at the break. Wheaton sophomore back Andrea Winn (Westwood, Mass./Westwood) deposited her second goal of the season at the 41:58 mark on a beautiful feed from classmate Sarah McNicholas (Boxboro, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) outside of the circle. Dutchwomen junior forward Allison Troy (Bradford, N.H./Kent School) capped the scoring with her fifth goal of the year at 48:33.

Cohen put the Dutchwomen on the scoreboard first at the 29:18 mark as she beat a Lyons defender in the circle and snapped a shot into the lower right corner of the cage for a 1-0 advantage. Seventeen seconds later, Cohen gathered a loose ball outside of the circle, sprinted into the scoring area and blasted a low shot across the cage into the lower left corner for her second goal of the season.

In the second half, McNicholas engineered Wheaton's lone marker in the contest with a sharp pass to Winn near the left post from about 10-yards outside the circle that was redirected in behind Union's junior goaltender Molly McCune (Arlington, Mass./Arlington).

McCune turned away three shots in 67 minutes and 11-seconds of action while backup goaltender Corey Hedges (Longmeadow, Mass./Longmeadow) was not tested in two minutes and 49-seconds of play. Lyons goaltender Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) made a game-high 12 saves, six in each half.

Union outshot Wheaton, 19-6, on the afternoon while the Lyons won the corners matchup, 10-8.
