McCann supplies offense for Lyons
PAXTON, Mass. – Behind a six save shutout from junior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons, Mass./Barnstable) and a pair of goals by junior back Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Lincoln School), the Wheaton College field hockey team shut out Anna Maria, 2-0, in non-conference action on Tuesday night.
The Lyons outshot their opposition 23-10 in the contest and compiled 20 penalty corners, including 14 in the second half, to dictate play en route to improving their record to 2-1 on the season. The AMCATS fall to 1-1 overall.
McCann deposited her first goal of the season, an unassisted tally, at the 23:36 mark to give Wheaton an early 1-0 lead. Both teams were held scoreless for a little over 35 minutes until senior co-captain Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) found McCann for the all-important insurance goal at 58:49.
Chick and freshman Holly Norberg (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) both had earlier scoring opportunities turned away by a nice defensive saves from sophomore Amanda Hebert (South Deerfield, Mass./Smith Academy) and senior Nicole Morrison (Rutland, Mass./Stoughton).
Sophomore goalkeeper Mary Kate Breen (Londonderry, N.H./Londonderry) kept the hosts in the game compiling 15 saves with six coming in the first half and nine in the second stanza.
Wolters picked up her first-career shutout in a Wheaton uniform (14 games) stopping two shots in the first half and another four in the second. Sophomore midfielder Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass./Worcester Academy) tallied a game-high seven shots, all on goal.
Wheaton is off until Friday night at 7 p.m. against Regis College at Diane C. Nordin '80 Turf Field. Friday will mark the first-ever game played on the brand new facility. The Lyons are 4-0 against the Pride dating back to 2003. Both teams last met in 2007, a 13-0 victory for the Blue and White. Anna Maria travels to Eastern Connecticut State on Thursday for a 4:30 p.m. non-conference tilt.
