Massengill records nine saves in loss
WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team dropped a 5-1 decision to Wellesley College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
Wellesley freshman Nikki Sharkin (Summit, N.J./Summit) registered two goals, while sophomore Hannah Flesch (Rockville, Md./Walter Johnson) dished out two assists to fuel the offense.
Sophomore Anissa Sridhar (Idlerton, Ontario/Lakefield College School), freshman Courtney Peterson (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) and junior Nathalie Gruet (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) all added tallies in the win for the Blue.
Wheaton co-captains Emily Chick (Bangor, Maine/Bangor) and Jenna Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./Dighton-Rehoboth Regional) factored into the Lyons' lone goal of the afternoon as Rocha set up Chick for her second goal of the season at 68:25.
Rocha currently ranks seventh all-time on the career points list at Wheaton with 68 total on 28 goals and 12 assists. Rocha is two points shy of tying Jessica Strock '11 for sixth all-time. Chick stands in at eighth overall with 56 career points (17g, 22a).
Wheaton senior goalkeeper Ellie Massengill (Amherst, Mass./Amherst Regional) stopped a season-high nine shots, while Wellesley senior goalkeeper Brit Mscisz (Topsfield, Mass./Pingree) made one save to improve to 6-1 overall on the year.
The Blue bumped their record to 33-13-0 in the all-time series against the Lyons which dates back to 1976. Wellesley outshot Wheaton, 29-5, in the contest and held a 20-1 advantage in penalty corners.
Wheaton (3-5, 0-1 NEWMAC) hosts UMass Dartmouth tomorrow afternoon at Nordin Field in non-conference action at noon. Wellesley (6-1, 1-0 NEWMAC) travels to Connecticut College for a non-conference matchup on Wednesday, September 25 at 6:30 p.m.
