Harris and McNicholas score for Lyons in the loss
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Wheaton College field hockey team fell 8-2 to Salve Regina University on Saturday evening at the Scotts Miracle-Gro Athletics Complex in Providence, Rhode Island.
Salve Regina junior Abigail Tepper (Foxboro, Mass. / Foxboro) led the Seahawks with two goals and one assist, including eight shots, on the evening. Classmate Marissa Gagnon (Smithfield, R.I./Smithfield) also tallied two goals (seven shots) and one assist in the victory.
Wheaton sophomore Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass./Worcester Academy) found the back of the net for the Lyons at 22:59, while senior co-captain Sarah McNicholas (Concord, Mass./Acton-Boxboro Regional) put home her first goal of the season at 40:01 beating the Seahawks' goalkeeper through traffic in front of the cage. First-years' Hannah Southard (Gorham, Maine/Gorham), and Katie Peters (Medway, Mass./Medway) each recorded a shot on net in the loss for the Blue and White.
The Seahawks outshot the Lyons, 31-6, and recorded eight corners in the contest. Wheaton senior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) compiled 13 saves in her 63 minutes in net. First-year Riley Thompson (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) did not see a shot on net in 6:35 of action. Salve Regina goalkeeper Murphy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Lincoln School) turned away two shots.
The Lyons (1-1) will open up their slate of home contests against Anna Maria College next Tuesday evening at Nordin Field at 7:00 p.m. Salve Regina (2-0) will travel to Worcester State for a non-conference matchup on Saturday, September 6 at 3:30 p.m.
