Lyons push overall record to 7-2 on the season
NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Junior forward/midfielder Kelsey Harris (Spencer, Mass./Worcester Academy) scored with 1:32 left in regulation to lift the Wheaton College field hockey team to a 1-0 win over Smith College in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the Lyons (7-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) snapped a two-game losing skid against the Pioneers (1-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) and improved to 24-16-0 in the all-time series versus Smith, which dates back to 1980. Wheaton has also won five out of its last six matches this season and is 3-2 in the last five meetings against Smith.
Senior co-captain Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Lincoln School) set up Harris' game-winning tally in the 69th minute of the contest for her team-leading seventh assist of the 2014 campaign. Harris currently ranks first on the squad in goals with seven and points with 18 (7g, 4a).
Wheaton senior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barnstable) stopped a game-high ten shots to bump her record to 7-2 overall. In her nine starts this season, Wolters has compiled ten or more saves in five games. Smith first-year goalkeeper Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) made four saves in the loss (0-1).
The Pioneers' best opportunity of the match came in the 25th minute as junior forward Kat Estes (Falmouth, Mass./Falmouth) took a shot that beat Wolters, but senior back Dana MacDonald (Belmont, Mass./Belmont) came up with the defensive save – her first of the season – to keep the score level at the time.
Smith outshot Wheaton, 20-12, and held a 20-8 advantage in penalty corners.
Wheaton (7-2, 1-1 NEWMAC) hosts Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday, September 30 at 7 p.m. Smith (1-6, 0-2 NEWMAC) travels to Simmons College for a 7 p.m. non-conference match on Tuesday.
