Bruce produces first career multi-goal game for the Lyons in the win
CHICOPEE, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team claimed a 5-0 victory over Elms College in non-conference action on Thursday evening at Leary Field.
Wheaton sophomore Darci Bruce (Walpole, Mass./Walpole) recorded a pair of goals and four shots, while senior Sarah McNicholas (Concord, Mass./Acton-Boxboro), first-year Emma Peterson (Yarmouth, Maine/Yarmouth) and sophomore Amelia Gage (Lebanon, N.H./Lebanon) each put home goals to snap a three-game losing skid for the Lyons.
Elms senior Kayla Narey (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley) recorded a pair of shots to pace the Blazers' offense. Classmate Ashley Reid (Enfield, Conn./Enrico Fermi) and junior Abby McNulty (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) added one shot apiece, while junior goalkeeper Samantha Alvino (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) made a game-high 17 saves for her ninth 10-plus save contest this season.
In the opening six minutes of action, the Lyons recorded two penalty corners, four shots – two of which were stopped by Alvino – and the eventual first tally of the game. Gage helped open up the scoring as she gathered a loose ball in front of the cage and passed it to Bruce who fired it past Alvino at the 6:03 marker for her fifth goal of the season to give the Blue and White and early 1-0 lead.
Wheaton extended its advantage to 2-0, when Tracy McCann (Westerly, R.I./Lincoln School) initiated a shot in front of the net and McNicholas grabbed the rebound to deposit it for her fourth goal of the year at the 17:14 mark. The Lyons continued to put pressure on the Elms defense as they recorded five shots that were all turned away by Alvino in the final 15 minutes of action in the first half.
Early in the second stanza, Bruce poked home a rebound into the corner of the cage for her second goal of the game and sixth goal of the season to give Wheaton a 3-0 differential on the scoreboard at the 41:52 marker. After a penalty corner from Bruce and a shot by first-year Brooke Dugan (Saint George, Maine/Oceanside), Gage knocked in the loose ball at 58:55 to put the Lyons up 4-0.
The Blue and White put the game completely out of reach in the 67th minute when Peters fed the ball to Peterson, who put in the rebound for her second goal of the season to make the score 5-0.
Wheaton senior goalkeeper Madison Wolters (Marstons Mills, Mass./Barstable) had one save in the victory to improve to 8-5 this season. The Lyons held a 27-4 advantage in shots and an 11-1 margin in penalty corners.
