NORTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team picked up its third consecutive season opening win under head coach Cara Reese on Wednesday evening at Nordin Field. The Lyons earned a 5-2 victory over visiting Roger Williams University.
Junior Amelia Gage got the scoring started for the Lyons with a goal just over a minute into the game. Wheaton found the back of the net seven minutes later on an unassisted goal by sophomore Kelsey Buckley.
Gage played a part in Wheaton's next goal, slotting the ball to an open Ellen Gulezian, who blasted the ball past the RWU keeper at the 32:02 mark. Roger Williams found a way to get on the board a minute later on an Elizabeth Whitney goal.
The Hawks cut the deficit to a single goal at the start of the second half with a goal from Katherine Mahoney. That would be as close as the Lyons would let RWU get.
Sophomore Katie Peters put Wheaton ahead 4-2 in the 52nd minute, before picking up an assist in the 59th. The sophomore midfielder found a crashing Brooke Dugan, who slotted the ball by the Hawk keeper.
Sophomore goalkeeper Riley Thompson earned the win for Wheaton, making four saves. Mya Lunn was credited with the loss for Roger Williams.
Wheaton once again takes to Nordin Field on Saturday, Sept. 5 for a 12 p.m. match-up against Regis (Mass.).
