NORTON, Mass. – Five goals propelled No. 12 Babson College over the host Wheaton College Lyons on Tuesday night in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action at Nordin Field.
The win moves the nationally ranked Beavers to 14-2 on the season and 6-1 in conference action. The Lyons fall to 8-6 overall and 1-5 against NEWMAC opponents.
Babson came out of the gates strong, netting the games first goal in the 13th minute. Ashley Tango put the visitors on the board with a shot from the top of the arc that made its way into the left corner of the goal.
Catherine Gilman made it 2-0 Babson with a goal at the 28:11 mark. The goal came on a nice feed from Kelsi McDougle on the right side, which allowed Gilman to push the ball inside the left post.
Wheaton cut the deficit in half a minute later on a penalty corner. Stopping the ball at the top of the arc, Darci Bruce slid the ball into Katie Peters who ripped one into net. The goal is Peters seventh of the season.
Elise Towers countered the Wheaton goal a few minutes later with a goal of her own right before the half.
Towers netted her second goal of the contest in the second half, finding goal in the 56th minute. Staci Swallow and McDougle setup the play, moving the ball from the right side of the field to Towers on the left post. Jacki Merrigan ended the scoring in the 68th minute, handing Babson the 5-1 win.
Riley Thompson picked up the loss for Wheaton, despite coming up with 13 saves in the contest. Kayla Costa earned the win for Babson after playing 64:12 minutes in goal. Hayley Silva replaced Costa with a little over five minutes remaining in the contest.
Wheaton returns to the field on Saturday, Oct. 24 at home against WPI at 12 p.m. The Lyons will celebrate the senior class during prior to the contest.
