Gage Nets a Hat Trick as Field Hockey Defeats BSU 4-1

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior Amelia Gage had her best game of the season on Tuesday night, netting a hat trick, as the Wheaton College field hockey team defeated host Bridgewater State 4-1 at Swenson Field.

The Lyons improve to 9-7 on the season, while the Bears fall to 7-10 overall.

Bridgewater State struck first with a goal by midfielder Emily Mosca in the 16th minute of play. The goal came after a nice pass from Brittany Cullinane, which allowed Mosca to beat the keeper with a shot that bounced off the post.

Gage netted the equalizer for Wheaton just over five minutes later. Sophomore Kelsey Buckley set up the goal with a pass to the middle of the half-circle and onto the stick of Gage who fired a shot that found the right side of the cage.

With less than five minutes remaining in the opening half, Gage tallied her second goal of the game to give the Lyons the 2-1 lead. Gage sent a ball into the crease that was inadvertently knocked into the net by a BSU defender.

Katie Peters got into the action in the 52nd minute with her ninth goal of the season with a converted penalty corner. Darci Bruce sent the ball into Peters, who was behind the BSU defense, who redirected the pass into a wide open right side of the net.

Gage completed her hat trick and the scoring with her team-leading 10th goal of the season in the 60th minute. Peters earned the assist with a pass from the left side to the middle of the half-circle. Gage ripped a shot that beat BSU keeper between the pads.

Riley Thompson recorded her eighth win of the season for the Lyons after picked up seven saves. Emily Curran also saw time in goal for Wheaton, coming up with three saves.

Wheaton returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 31 at Mount Holyoke at 12 p.m.
