SCHENECTADY, NY - A goal scored less than three minutes into overtime lifted Union College over the visiting Wheaton College field hockey team 4-3 at Frank Bailey Field Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Dutchwomen improved to 2-1 while Wheaton is 2-2.
Charolotte Leyland stole the ball off a stoppage 10 yards out to the right of the net, and her shot deflected off a Lyons' defender into the back of the net.
Riley Thompson made 12 saves for Wheaton, while the Dutchwomen keeper Laura Aptowitz made nine saves.
The game was scoreless in the first half, but the Dutchwomen came out strong in the second stanza and led 3-0 after 60:45.
Undeterred, the Lyons got on the scoreboard just 1:17 after Union's third score, starting the teams comeback efforts. Hannah Southard scored an unassisted goal and at 62:39, and assisted Kelsey Buckley for her fifth of the year that made it 3-2. The Lyons completed the comeback at 65:36 on Holly Norberg's tying goal on a penalty stroke.
Unfortunately for Wheaton, Union manged to do just enough to put one away minutes into the overtime period.
The Lyons return to the field on Tuesday, Sept. 13 when they host Salve Regina for a 7 p.m. contest.
