Lyons Open NEWMAC Action Against #11 Wellesley

NORTON, Mass. - The Wheaton College field hockey team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon with a 5-0 loss to #11 Wellesley College.

The Blue (4-0/1-0 NEWMAC) got on the board early with a goal from Nikki Sharkin. Sharkin knocked in her second goal of the game 10 minutes later with help from Mitzi Wiggin. Wiggin, who took the penalty corner, fed the ball from the left post to an open Sharkin who blasted it home. Wellesley tacked on one more goal before the half with a rocket shot from the top of the circle by Cecie Negron.

Negron made it a 4-0 contest in the 52nd minute with her second goal of the game. Once again the sophomore shot the ball from the top of the circle after receiving it from Wiggin on the penalty corner. The Blue ended the scoring with a goal from Haley Chrobock in the 62nd minute.

The highlight of the match for the Lyons was a penalty stroke save in the 34th minute by junior goalkeeper Riley Thompson. Thompson ended the game with 13 total saves.

Katie Peters led Wheaton in shots with four, while JoAnn Bourgoin and Michelle Trainor each had one.

Wellesley keeper Maggie Connelly made two saves, while Sharkin and Courtney Peterson led all players with eight shots.
