NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – The Wheaton College field hockey team dropped a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest at Smith College Saturday afternoon, falling to the Pioneers 1-0.
The Lyons (3-5; 0-2 NEWMAC) defense held its own against the Pioneers (4-4; 2-2 NEWMAC) who outshot the visitors 28-5, while holding a 14-5 advantage in corners.
Wheaton sophomore goalkeeper Riley Thompson came up with 16 saves in the contest, only allowing the one goal, which came in the second half.
Wheaton returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at home against Johnson & Wales for a 7 p.m. contest.
