NORTON, Mass. – Hannah Southard scored twice as the Wheaton College field hockey team picked up a 6-1 win over Johnson & Wales (RI) Wednesday night at Diane C. Nordin '80 Field.
The Lyons (4-5) had five different players score against the Wildcats. Southard led the charge, while Amelia Gage ended the night with three assists.
Despite being outshot 16-10, Johnson & Wales (3-6) got on the board first with a goal by Madeline Larson. Larson, who collected the ball in the circle, dribble through two Wheaton defenders before turning and sending a backhand chip shot into the top right corner of the cage.
Southard scored her first goal of the game in the 15th minute, tying the game at 1-1. Just five minutes later, Southard and Gage teamed up once again for the next goal with Gage gathering a rebound and directing to Southard. Wheaton tacked on one more goal before the half with sophomore Michelle Connolly feeding the ball to Ellen Gulezian for her first goal of the season.
Senior Michelle Trainor struck first in the second half, being in the right place at the right time in the 44th minute. A penalty corner, taken by Kelsey Buckley, made its way to the top of the circle where it was passed to Gage in the center, who threaded it perfectly to a wide open Trainor on the left post.
Trainor picked up an assist less than three minutes later, setting up senior Darci Bruce for her second goal of the season. Defender Salena Helmreich got in on the action in the 53rd minute, netting the contests final goal.
