Field Hockey Falls to Bridgewater State 2-1

NORTON, Mass. - Senior Amelia Gage scored in the 49th minute but it was not enough as the Wheaton College field hockey team fell 2-1 to visiting Bridgewater State at Nordin Field on Tuesday evening.

The Bears held a 18-7 advantage in shots, while Wheaton ended the game with a slim 6-5 edge in penalty corners.

Despite outshooting the Lyons 11-1 in the first half, Bridgewater State only put one past Wheaton keeper Riley Thompson in the opening frame. Thompson came up with six of her nine saves in the first half. A cross from Christine Curran, who was posted up on the right side, to a wide open Kathryn Jacobson on the left opened the scoring for the Bears.

Gage pulled the Lyons even in the 49th minute with a stellar finish to the left corner. Senior Ellen Gulezian setup the goal with a feed from the left baseline.

Bridgewater State leading scorer, Brittany Cullinane, netted her 20th goal of the season just under two minutes later to put her team back on top. The goal came on a clean-up shot by the senior.

Wheaton had a couple chances to score one late, but were unable to get the ball past Bridgewater State goalkeeper Allison Chappell. Chappell finished the game with two saves.

Wheaton returns to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday, Oct. 29 with a 1 p.m. contest against Mount Holyoke on the Lyons home turf.
