Battaglia drops in 16 points off the bench
BRISTOL, R.I. – The Wheaton College men's basketball team dropped a 69-57 decision to Roger Williams University on the road at the Campus Recreation Center Gymnasium in non-conference action on Tuesday evening.
Lyons' sophomore guard Billy Battaglia (Simsbury, Conn./Taft School) posted a game-high 16 points off the bench in 24 minutes of play and freshman guard Agyei Gregory (St. Thomas, Virgin Islands/St. Andrews) collected 14 points. Junior forward Mike O'Loughlin (Milford, N.H./Milford) turned in nine points, one rebound and one steal, while freshman forward Quinton Dale (Winthrop, Mass./Taft School) contributed six points, eight rebounds, two blocks and one assist.
Roger Williams had three student-athletes in double-figures on the night including Josh Syska (Peabody, Mass./St. John's Prep), Chris Bardwell (North Andover, Mass./North Andover) and Will Gerencer (Bowdoin, Maine/Mt. Ararat). Syska and Baldwell scored 14 points apiece and Gerencer tallied 12 points. All three student-athletes also had at least five rebounds in the contest.
The Hawks eventually pulled away with their first victory of the season erasing a 50-50 tie with 11:10 remaining in the contest. After Battaglia evened the score at 50-all on a jumper, Roger Williams went on a 12-5 run as Gerencer scored six-straight points down the stretch for the hosts including a three-pointer at the 6:35 mark (59-54). Bardwell followed with a jump shot at 2:20 and both teams went on to exchange buckets before the Hawks put the game away in the waning moments converting 3-of-4 free throw attempts for the win.
Roger Williams received scoring contributions from eight separate student-athletes in the second stanza, outrebounded Wheaton 15-11 and shot 37.0-percent (10-for-27) from the floor. The Hawks also were 13-for-15 at the free throw line.
Gregory notched his fifth-straight double-digit performance on the season in as many games. The Lyons outscored Roger Williams 30-16 in the paint, 8-2 on the fastbreak and 33-16 in bench points.
Wheaton (2-3) hosts Emmanuel College on Tuesday, December 3 for a non-conference matchup at 7 p.m. Roger Williams (1-4) visits Nichols College on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m.
