Wheaton Falls to WNE 73-58 in Herby Kenny Tip-Off Tournament

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wheaton College men's basketball team opened the Herb Kenny Tip Off Tournament (Wesleyan University) with a 73-58 loss to Western New England on Friday night in Silloway Gymnasium.

Both the Lyons and Golden Bears move to 1-1 on the season.

Sophomore David Carbonello once again led the offense with a team-high 17 points, while Quinton Dale picked up his second double-double of the year. Dale knocked down 11 points, while pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds. The senior also led the team with three steals. Sophomore Ryan Fogarty netted nine points off the bench for Wheaton, while collecting six boards and two steals.

Mike Gelineau of WNE led all players with 18 points, while Mayo Aina scored 11 points and pulled down 10 boards off the bench for the Golden Bears. Luis Agrait picked up a game-high three steals, while Gelineau and Aina each earned a game-high two blocks.

The first half began as a dog fight with the two sides battling for each point. After trading possession of the lead and tying the contest five times, Wheaton eventually captured its largest lead with 1:47 remaining in the first half. With the game tied at 25-25, the Lyons used a 13-2 run, which was capped off by a Fogarty layup, to take a 38-27 advantage.

Wheaton maintained the lead until an Aina layup with 12:42 remaining in the game handed the Golden Bears a 50-49 lead. The lead would stick despite the Lyons best efforts.

Wheaton returns to the tip-off tournament for a contest against Southern Maine on Saturday, Nov. 19. The game-time is TBA.
