Men's Basketball Defeats Coast Guard, 83-71

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Wheaton College men's basketball team opened New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Wednesday night with a 83-71 win at the United States Coast Guard Academy. 

Wheaton advances to 6-6 overall and 1-0 in NEWMAC play while the Coast Guard falls to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in conference competition.

Junior Ryan Fogarty scored a season-high 23 points to lead the team while senior Quinton Dale tallied 13. Sophomore David Carbonello led the Lyons in rebounds with seven as sophomore Duaka Ekwensi registered six. 

Freshman Max Lampe led the Bears with 18 points. Freshman Patrick Witkowski had the first double-double of his collegiate career as he finished with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. 

Wheaton built a 14-7 lead with in the first six minutes of the game before the Bears ran off six straight cutting the deficit to 14-13 with 12 minutes left in the opening half.

Coast Guard pulled even for the first time 20-20 on an old fashion 3-point play 8:52 left in the half before the Lyons ran off eight straight to start a 15-2 spurt as the Lyons took a 35-22 lead with 1:51 left in the half. 

Wheaton outscored the Bears 18-4 to end the half as Coast Guard made just two of its final 15 field goal attempts in the half. 

The Lyons led 38-24 at halftime and didn't let the Bears closer than nine for most of the second half until Coast Guard scored eight straight capped on a trifecta by Lampe cutting the deficit to 62-58 with 5:25 left. Wheaton would allow Coast Guard just 13 more points the rest of the way, while putting down 21 more of its own. 

Wheaton concluded the game shooting 52.8 percent from the floor in the win (28-53) while making eight of 19 from three-point range. The Lyons shot 51.9 percent from the field in the first half (14-27) including 4 of 10 from behind the arc.

Wheaton returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 7 at 1 p.m. against Clark University in Emerson Gymnasium for another NEWMAC contest.
