BABSON PARK, Mass. - The Wheaton College men's basketball team traveled to No. 1 Babson College on Saturday afternoon for a battle of unbeaten New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) teams. The Beavers, who are currently the top ranked team in the nation according to D3hoops.com, earned a 76-57 win over the visiting Lyons.
Ryan Fogarty finished with a team-high 17 points, while Quinton Dale and Timothy Berry each netted 11 in the loss. Berry ended the day 4-of-5 from the floor, which included a 3-for-4 performance from three-point range. Dale ended the afternoon with a team-high eight rebounds and four blocks.
Nick Comenale led all players with 19 points and 11 rebounds, while teammate Joey Flannery knocked down 16 points in the win. Isaiah Nelsen and Sam Bohmiller also finished in double-figures, scoring 14 and 13 points respectively.
Babson led by as many as seven in the opening minutes and closed the first half with a 7-0 run, which included four points from Bohmiller, to take a 37-32 edge into the locker room. Wheaton junior Liam Bruno tied the game at 43-43 a little over seven minutes into the second half before the Beavers ripped off a 13-0 run to take control of the game.
A layup by David Stauffer made it 46-43 at the 11:43 mark, Comenale drained a three-pointer to push the lead to seven, and Flannery followed with back-to-back hoops to push the Babson advantage to 56-53 with 7:46 left. The Lyons pulled back within nine on a pair of free throws by Dale, but a Nelsen tip-in followed by a dunk and another triple by Comenale made it 63-47 with 4:29 to play.
Fogarty and Berry knocked down consecutive three-pointers to trim Babson's lead to 63-53 less than a minute later, but the Beavers responded by scoring on six of its final seven possessions for the final margin.
Wheaton returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 18 for a 7 p.m. contest against Emerson College.
